New research claims that diet-not dumbbells is what counts i.e. make sure you eat properly. Apparently if you watch an extra hour of TV every day you consume an extra 100 calories when you are sitting there! If you do 45 minutes running on the treadmill at 7 miles an hour and you eat a blueberry muffin you are back to where you were! 16 minutes on an indoor rower equals a kit kat! 14 minutes lifting weights equals a cappuccino, 15 minutes of stretching equals a 50gram energy bar and 10 minutes on a bike equals a low fat yohurt! It comes as no surprise to learn that US children are now an average of 4 kilos heavier than they were in the 70’s. However, let’s not get too smug on this side of the pond. As the Times report concludes “the whole economic system is built around consumption we have responded, we have overconsumed and we have an obesity and environmental crisis to prove it”.
